What is PMTCT?

Prevention Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) is a cornerstone in the HIV/AIDS epidemic battle in sub Sahara Africa. Ninety percent of children living with HIV/AIDS acquire the infection during pregnancy, birth or breast feeding.

PMTCT medical programs include antiretroviral prophylaxis for the HIV/AIDS mothers before delivery and for the infant just after delivery as well as a controlled breast feeding regimen.

Participation in PMTCT medical programs greatly reduces the infants' risk of acquiring HIV infection from its HIV positive mother. These programs are provided by the Ugandan Ministry of Health.
